Summary of Mementomori.social Mementomori.social is a general purpose free for all Mastodon instance established in November 2022, hosted by a Finnish full stack web developer and Chief Technology Officer Roni "Rolle" Laukkarinen with over two decades of server and web experience. The instance runs by volunteers and has 5 admins in total. Despite the name, the nature of this server is NOT temporary, on the contrary, it is thoroughly optimized both financial- and administration-wise and is constantly worked on to be as future-proof as possible. We are a very liberal instance. Mementomori.social supports the development of Mastodon and the Fediverse and is pro-Threads and pro-Bluesky federation and ActivityPub integration. This instance allows: Regular, personal user accounts Users from all sides of the spectrum regardless of status, gender, movement, political party, etc. (excluding extremism) Anonymous user accounts (with a reason) Companies Use of GenAI (when compliant with other terms) Bots and users with API use (with a reason) Personal and commercial marketing (excluding automated private messages) Associations and organisations Marketing All languages Politics Bluesky bridge Bridgy.fed Threads.net Indexing of public content and profiles (please read our Privacy policy) We welcome users all over the world, but the majority of users are Finnish as the server is based in Helsinki, Finland. Features Full feature listing here. Software We use a modified fork of the nightly version of Mastodon (main branch on GitHub). We follow mastodon.social which is the instance of the founder of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko, to guarantee the stableness of the server. No untested and unintended commits are used in production environment. The current version and modifications with full source code can always be found in the footer (bottom right on desktop), see the View source code -link. The server software is always patched to the most secure version and no unsafe modifications are used. This Code contains the rules and principles for participating in the Mementomori.social community. The Code is intended to protect all members of our community from harassment and to ensure that our community is as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This is a working document and partly based on Mastodon.world's CoC (thank you guys). Goals Support open and free social web movement, open source and the development of Mastodon, Fediverse and the ActivityPub protocol. Provide a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, political affiliation, or other similar characteristic. Create a supportive community, where people freely share their passions and are excited and positive about each other’s successes. Protect our community from harassment, malicious or illegal content and from individual members whose goals are to disrupt our community and promote their own self-interest at the expense of the community. Principles that guide us We are not a free speech zone. This code of conduct lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. Rules for posting The rules you need to follow if you want to be a member of our community are stated below. General guidance on posting and participating in Mementomori.social Try not to post about inflammatory, controversial subjects without a Content Warning. Ideally, you would not post about inflammatory subjects at all. However, it may be acceptable to do so in some cases, but please, do consider using an appropriate Content Warning. Do not post any type of nudity without a Content Warning. Do not engage in name calling, ad hominem attacks, or any other uncivil behaviour. Criticize ideas, never people. Do not report every post that upsets you. Please report posts that violate our rules but for others that you may find distasteful, or just don’t like, use the tools available to you. You can block the user or mute the conversation. Moderation Principles Reported content will be assessed on a balance of probabilities by the moderators. In other words, whether it is more likely than not that the content violates one or more of these rules. Moderators will suspend an account from mementomori.social when the user demonstrates that they have breached any rule several times, or if their content (including profile description) suggests that they are likely to continue to break the rules. The number of breaches leading to suspension is deliberately not defined. In egregious cases, one breach can result in suspension of the user account. The moderation team takes a pragmatic approach to every report they receive - if they feel that a problematic post isn’t explicitly a breach of any of these rules but is inappropriate for Mementomori.social, the post will likely be removed. Users who repeatedly post problematic content or otherwise are seen by the moderators as a negative, disruptive presence in our community can be removed at the discretion of the moderation team, even if those posts or the user did not explicitly violate our rules. Longevity The admins of this server has been committed to keep it running ad infinitum and can control it as long as they live and breathe. Memento mori is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death, but it also refers to a various topics like a certain type of stoic philosophy of peace and acceptance, visual art, literature, architecture, music, culture, history and equality. The server name origins from a stoic latin phrase "Memento mori" and is originally sparked from the thought "what happens to the instance if something happens to the owner(s)". The admin of this server is a stoic-ish person who believes we never really "die", nothing is permanent and at the same time everything is. We carry on. By being here you accept things are prone to changes. What's the catch? There is no catch. Mastodon should be free and available for everyone. The instance was born in Fall 2022 after Elon Musk purchased Twitter, but even before that Rolle had followed the development of Mastodon with a keen eye. Welcome!
